Should We Say Sorry?

February 11, 2008

kevin-rudd.jpg

Should this man say sorry? This is a debate that is waging right now, and quite frankly I quickly jumped on the NO bandwagon even before the question was asked.

For those of you who don’t know what the so called “Stolen Generation” is, let me fill you in. During the years of 1869 and 1969 the Governement after acts under Parliament, removed children of aboriginal decent from their parents and put into oprphaniges and internment camps. To what extent this happened is a large debate in Australia quite often.

Well now Mr Rudd is the king dick of the country, he has now announced that he will be offering a formal apology from his government, who might I remind readers represent each and every Australian citizen.

Some people will say I’m racist, and some people will say I’m ignorant, but I one hundred percent, without a doubt in my mind, believe that he should not say sorry.

I don’t care about it, it happened long before I was born, and it was finishing when my parents were a lot younger than I am, so they don’t really care. They had nothing to do with it, neither did I so there is no way in hell I will apologise,

The Government tried to do the right thing, and save a lot of children from abuse, and I think that while they may have gone about it the wrong way, and a lot of children were taken for the wrong reasons, it’s time for us all to move on.

And uttering the word “Sorry” isn’t going to fix anything, instead they will just expect something more like some compensation of some kind.

So while Mr. Rudd believes this will win him some brownie points, I’m quite sure it’s going to make him lose a lot of fans

Is R 18+ Rating for Gaming Required in Australia?

October 20, 2007

It seems to me over the last few months that more and more games are being denied by the classification office of Australia. After the expected banning of Manhunt 2 I was pretty steamed, but with the denial of the newest addition to the Soldier of Fortune franchise I have become more than just slightly annoyed by the “powers” held by the classification office

Does Australia require an R18+ rating for gaming? In my opinion yes. Why should adult gamers be denied adult story lines, and adult gameplay? Gaming has moved from the stereo-typical teenager in his bedroom or hanging out in the arcade. The teenagers from the launch of videogames are still gamers, and as they have matured, so have their taste in games.

Sure, Manhunt 2 involved murder, brutality and the whole deal, but what difference is between us playing it than watching the latest Saw movie or Hostel. R 18 ratings are given on movies, another form of media that is just as influential, if not more so than games. If the classification laws wish to outlaw some games, then why don’t they outlaw movies that are classified for Adults Only.

Many will argue that games are easier for people under the age of 18 to obtain. What about pornography. The sale of pornography to underage kids doesn’t happen that often in this country, yet I bet 80% of all underage males have items of pornography downloaded on their computers. The R18 law is quite easily bypassed, but at least it puts barriers in place that stops a lot of underage people accessing what is considered to be “inappropriate content”

I’m not sure how many Australian’s will read this, and I’m not entirely sure how many Australian gamers will read this and they will understand that an R 18+ rating in Australia will only pushing the industry into a positive field. More adult games for adult gamers, and less content that is kept off the shelves, and less games that we miss out on due to Classification Laws

Dig some holes, burn some wood?!

October 16, 2007

The last few weeks have been….. interesting to say the least!

We had a certain Croatian friend move into the house, which was ok for about three seconds but since then has done nothing but burn holes in our pockets and caused me to get severely high blood pressure. It’s ok, the school year is almost out and I can tell him it’s time to move on, but I’ve gotta play it cool due to the fact that when I’m not living with him, he’s a damn good mate.

Nearly bought a business in Adelaide a few weeks ago. Hell it’s still even possible I could buy it, but as fate would have it Chaise and I opened up an online gaming store and it’s been doing pretty good in it’s first week of operation so I’ve been flat out with that venture

What’s good right now? Warhawk on PS3, of course Halo 3 (even though it took me quite some time to appreciate it) and The Fire Restart EP.

What’s bad? RESIDENT EVIL EXTINCTION. How they could release a movie like this and actually think “wow people are going to like it”? It did no justice to the previous two movies, and I wouldn’t even pay money to rent it on DVD. What’s worse, after quite possibly the worst ending I have seen in recent times, they removed the comment from the site saying “This is the last Resident Evil movie” which means that somewhere in this crazy world of ours they are hoping to make another one? I’m sorry are you all retarded?

It’s ok, I’m sure those who call me constantly at work will love it  as most of them are retarded. Wow I truly love the life of a Help-Desk Monkey

But I suppose not everything is bad. I’ve made some new friends, said goodbye to some old ones, went to dig a hole and burn some wood so to speak. What do you do when all the wood is burned? You write a novel that’s what you do. 197 pages into it now, and to tell you the truth I am actually quite proud of most of the words I have put to paper

So look for a Halo 3 review, a Warhawk review and some of the new 360 releases that I will upload very soon

Too Much Exciting Stuff!

September 13, 2007

Well I’ve got so much to review this weeks I don’t even know where to start, so I thought I’d give you a run down with what’s coming into my hands

First off I got accepted to the Call of Duty 4 Xbox 360 Multiplayer Beta which was damn lucky on my behalf, so I will be sure to take some footage, some pics, and give you a full review after a weekends worth of gameplay. So far I have played it for a few hours, and I am DAMN impressed with it to say the least.

Then running through my CD player right now is not only the new album from Finnish rock group HIM Venus Doom, but also the follow up to In Your Honor from Foo Fighters, Echoes, Silence, Paitence and Grace. So you will also get a review on these two eagerly awaited albums

Monday sees the launch of the Team Fortress 2 beta for those who have pre-ordered The Orange Box, so I will be sure to report on that one. I have been following the progress of TF2 for years, since way back when it seemed to resemble what we are looking forward to with COD 4

Then after that, I’ve got Skate being released the following Thursday along with Stranglehold both on the Xbox 360, then of course the big Halo 3 launch the week after. Then a few weeks later, Zelda and The Phantom Hourglass on DS, followed by a comparison review of The Orange Box on PC and Xbox 360

Then I think not only will I be totally broke, but I will need a rest to get my head around things. Hopefully somewhere in all of this, I can get access to an Ipod Touch also :)

So stay tuned, back to Bioshock I go

It’s Been A Long While

August 31, 2007

Well ladies and gentlemen I know it has been a LONG time since I’ve updated this blog, and I am making it a priority to do so over the next few weeks. I have finally got my life in order, organised my time a little better, and am enjoying a lot of new things lately.

So what’s going on right now? Well I’m busily working on two major projects, the first being a five track concept EP for my band The Broadway Heist. It is about a war that takes place in 2020, but that’s all I am willing to say about it thus far, stay tuned! The second project being a new script I am working on, currently untitled but I am liking where it is shaping up. Hopefully I will have it finished in a few weeks, and then can start the casting process and get it filmed. I am also aiming to finally shoot Rose which I wrote nearly three years ago next year, if I can find a good enough cast

In the gaming world there are two games grabbing my attention. The first being the AMAZING Bioshock on the Xbox 360 which I have been waiting since I finished System Shock 2 all those years ago. It is truely a remarkable game, and usually I would advise to not believe the usual suspects for advice (Gamespot and IGN) but I gotta say, it’s a top notch game. I will be doing a review very soon! The next being Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on the Nintendo Wii. I’ve been hanging out for a good game on the Wii for a while now, and it’s finally come. Metroid is fantastic, visually a dream, controls are the best I’ve seen on the Wii thus far (except for Warioware) and it’s damn right fun!

Silversun Pickups are blasting in my Itunes playlist a lot at the moment, as well as the new Smashing Pumpkins album Zeigeist. Both are worth a listen indeed. I’m really hanging out for the new Gyroscope, Shihad and Jimmy Eat World albums, which are all due for release soon. The new HIM single Kiss of Dawn is making me go crazy with anticipation for their latest release, and The Pretender by old time favs Foo Fighters is making me excited where their new album will go, as I was a little let down by In Your Honor last time around

Hope everyone is well, and look back soon for reviews on pretty much everything I just mentioned in the above blog

New Items on the Testing Block

July 19, 2007

Well ladies and gentlemen, after a few weeks of relative inactivity on this blog, I’ve got some new toys to test over the weekend and write full reports on. One will be useful to many, the other will be useful to some. The first item on my testing block this week is a Nintendo DS Lite. Yes I know they have been around for quite sometime, but it wasn’t until Phantom Hourglass was announced that I had any interest what-so-ever to pick one up and play it, so I’ve jumped out and bought a new DS Lite with a few games. I must say I was quite surprised at the performance of the little machine, and unlike my PSP I actually am still playing it after day one! I certainly prefer it over my PSP. So for those who haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, I will be providing an in-depth review on the machine and it’s good and bad points, which hopefully will make the decision a lot easier for youSecond item is something Mac users would have been excited about for a long time, and that is Leopard. After seeing the test at the WWDC last month, I’m sure many of you have gotten your hands on a leaked copy from some kind of source on the interweb. I have used a copy myself on a friends laptop and I will be providing a look at what is good and what needs work with the latest beta release. I’m not too keen to install it myself as I would rather wait until the final version is released so I can buy it :) (Yes that’s right, I do buy my software, especially from Apple as I love to support such a great OS, and at least it’s affordable) So hopefully you are as excited to read about these two toys as I am to be examining them over the upcoming weekend. Got a nightmare day at work tomorrow, have a bunch of people moving from one site to my current site, and guess who has to plug in all their pc’s, setup all the VoIP phones and patch all the data points….. going to be a long day indeed. I’ve noticed a growing number of readers in my blog stats and I would like to thank you for your support. I will be spending some time in the next month sprucing up this site, but you input would be greatly appreciated. Why not comment or email me and tell me what you want to read about? Until the weekend, enjoy!Hellerphant

Games to come?

July 14, 2007

Well as most of you know E3 has come and gone, and while it didn’t hold the same spectacle as previous years, it didn’t fall short in the “Look what’s coming out” factor that it’s well known for.

Many of you may have seen the Press Conferences from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and have a fair idea about what each had to say. I myself caught the whole Nintendo conference, which while didn’t actually reveal anything I wasn’t really expecting, still did a great job in showing how the Industry is changing, and that Nintendo have some great ideas hidden up their sleeves.

It was after this conference I got into a chat with my friend, another gaming enthusiast about the current gen console war and what’s going to be around the corner when we look towards another generation of gaming consoles.

Let’s look at what we have before us now, with the Nintendo Wii, the Sony Playstation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360. Before you continue reading this, I want to state that I am not a “Fanboy” of any of these consoles, in fact I own all three! What I am stating here is my opinion of each console, at this point of time, and will not necessarily stay the same opinion in the future.

I remember on 360 launch night I was standing in line at EB games, counting down the seconds till Midnight struck and I could rush in, get my awesome new console, and go home and play till I couldn’t stay awake any longer. I had followed the 360′s progress for quite some time, and I was extremely excited at it’s potential. When I popped Ghost Recon into the machine I was blown away by what I was seeing! Then I thought, surely all the games can’t be this good, so I put on Condemmned and once again I was amazed at how great the games looked and played. Condemmned is my favourite Xbox 360 game to date, such a great story.

Then a few months later I found myself in a slum with no good games, and I was starting to lose faith in my Xbox. That was until Gears of War came out and showed me the real power of the 360. Gears of War is a fantastic game, but seeing visuals of that quality from a console was totally phenommenal.

Then I got my hands on a shiny new Playstation 3. I parted with $1110 for my new console along with a copy of Resistance Fall of Man and hurried home and plugged it in. First off, I was like….what the hell is this? The menu was very ugly to say the least, and the functionality wasn’t on par with the blade system of the 360′s interface. I just put it down to me not being used to it, and I quickly chucked in Resistance and loaded into a new game.

Within 15 minutes I found myself turning off the console, and almost crying at the fact I had just paid over $1000 for a peice of crap. The visuals of Resistance were horrible, and it felt to me like a PS2 game.

I decided to give it another go, and while not at all impressed with the game I did get through a fair portion of it, and the story was compelling. I downloaded some demos and hired some games, but time and time again I just put down the PS3 controller and picked up my Xbox…. or a book!

And don’t even start me on the PS3 controller! Basically I had bought myself a Blu Ray player. And I can hear the PS3 fans saying “it’s only the first gen of games, wait for some good games to come out”. The PS3 had a whole extra year in development than the 360 and the games are NOWHERE near the visual quality of the 360 launch titles. Even ports of 360 games such as Fight Night 3 come nowhere close!

Lack of games, lack of interest and lack of sales, Sony really need some consecutive wins if they want their console to survive much longer in this new generation of gaming consoles

But all in all what do these consoles really achieve? They are basically the same as their previous models, just better graphics, better games, and some nice features. Just beefed up, better versions of the last gen consoles.

What Nintendo have done is create something new. In a field where technology is always changing and evolving, we as consumers should expect these companies to push to new limits with a new console. The PS3 and Xbox 360 have done this in a degree, their visuals are fantastic, frame rates good and games are enjoyable, but it’s just the same old stuff, nothing revolutionary.

What the Wii does is create a new experience. To me it makes gaming exciting, and a new adventure, instead of me thinking wow another FPS let’s see what features it’s stolen from other games and check out the latest graphics engine. Wii has made gaming accessible for pretty much everyone, and the real minimalist approach to their controls really does pay off.

What doesn’t though is the lack of serious titles at the moment for the Wii. I love what Nintendo are trying to achieve, make everyone a gamer with fun, accessible games like Wii Sports, Cooking Mama and all these party games we are seeing as of late. I love all of these games, they are fun, but I’m a hardcore gamer. I want some great, serious, adult games to play also. Manhunt 2 was the first game I was seriously psyched about, and by the looks of it I won’t get to experience it on the Wii.

Thankfully games such as Resident Evil, Scarface and the Godfather are out, but I really do think Nintendo need to release some more of these style games to keep their hardcore fan basis there. Wii is great, but I am glad I do have the 360 as back up, and hopefully I will make use of my PS3 when some good games come out.

And the implementation of Wii Fit (a move I saw coming from the day I bought my Wii) is genious. Nintendo will expand their current audience, but will also create a lot of popularity while effectively trying to help fight the growing Childhood Obesity Epedemic

So basically I have no idea what to expect from the consoles that will come out in the future, but let’s hope Microsoft and Playstation take a note of Nintendo’s achievements, and take a step towards the future, in more than just Graphics

It’s Been A While!

July 6, 2007

Yes folks I know it has been basically FOREVER since I posted on this blog last. But quite frankly I have just been so busy with everything going on right now I haven’t had the time to get things running! So I promise over the next few days I’ll get the reviews flowing and get back into the swing of blogging again!

I may be changing this site next week as a friend of mine Teych has decided he would also like to invest his time into testing and reviewing music, moves and games, along with adding in a lot of rants about the goings on in this crazy world of ours. So don’t be surprised if you hit this site soon with a new look, new name and a bunch of articles by someone other than myself.

I hope everyone is well, and look forward to hear from you all soon

The Forbidden Fruit Has Been Tasted

May 28, 2007

http://digital-lifestyles.info/copy_images/apple-new-logo-lg.jpgLet’s face it, Apple have been around a long time, and in the last 30 years have created some truly amazing products. I suppose most of you are reading this using a mouse, well Apple was the creator of the mouse Oh and let’s not forget the mammoth popularity of the i-Pod.

When I was attending primary school, all we ever used were Macs. They were good at what they did, but being only 8 years old, I was totally unaware of the real features Mac has to offer.

Growing up and continuing my interest in computers, I had forgotten totally about Macs for years. Then a few weeks ago I got my hands on a 4 year old i-Book and I was totally amazed at how good tmy new Laptop was! And this laptop was 4 years old!

So I eagerly await my brand new Macbook that will be arriving tomorrow, in which I will give a detailed report and some photos. But after some serious research, I can see Apple making a damn good run at becoming a main player in PC’s here in Australia.

Boring Weekender

May 5, 2007

What a way to spend your weekend, being on call for work I really can’t do sweet F/A so I’m stuck hanging around the house on the premise that SOMEONE MIGHT call up with an issue. This morning I decided to let out my frustrations at 11am when I decided to play the drums for an hour or so, which ended very abruptly when a disgruntled neighbour came to my door with some abusive language.

So had a shower, and decided that after many years of wanting to play Ratchet and Clank 3: Up your Arsenal I might go and buy myself a copy. So went off to pick up my friend Monty (Alex McInnes) and we went over to EB games and got a copy of it. Get home, get the bad news that this game is not supported on the PS3, adding yet another reason to the list of why I hate the PS3.

So off to the parents house to borrow the PS2 and I discover that their PS2 decided to call it a day and it can’t read the disc. So then off I went to A-Mak’s house to borrow his PS2 and once again it’s laser has called it a day. WHAT IS WITH THIS WEEKEND! DOES IT HATE ME?

Then on the way home, quite randomly a high priced Saab drove through Traralgon and in a long and complicated affair, somehow Mr McInnes owes all of the Traralgon and surrounding areas one Blowjob each…..

What a strange and utterly boring Weekender. Right now I’m sitting back watching Casino Royale on Blu-Ray….. at least something to save the day :0
